R.E.A.D Saint John Ltd. was established in 1976 as the Saint John Area Literacy Council due to the high rate of illiteracy in the city. In 1988, the council was renamed READ Saint John to give the public a better understanding of its purpose: “Reading Education for Adult Development”. The Organization is a Laubach Literacy affiliate.
Tutors are trained and certified in the Laubach Literacy method which was developed to teach adults to read and write based on the “Each One Teach One” method. It permits individual programs to be adapted to each student’s personal needs and schedule.
OUR MISSION
READ Saint John helps Greater Saint John-area adults improve their literacy skills by offering free, confidential, one-to-one tutoring, with individual programs tailored to the learner’s needs.
OUR VISION
Every adult in Saint John has the literacy skills necessary to succeed in the modern world, leading to an educated workforce, which will, in turn, attract high-paying jobs to the area and improve our collective standard of living.
